The Bloody Tower
By “True” Thomas Whitehart, Bard of Strongbow

For The Tower, the Siege Tower of Strongbow

On a hot and dusty plain, with my helmet burning bright
I know my flanks are fading, as we give in to the right
I lift my shield, my aching arm, my sword it feels like lead
I know that in a moment, my friends and I are dead
But wait.
What lumbering monstrosity, has lurched onto the field?
The sweat inside my visor, drips from rusty steel
A tower, a tower, they built a bloody tower.
I hear them grunt and groan, as it pulls up to the bridge.
From the deck on high, I hear the order,
Archers to the left! And soon the battle changes
As The Tower lets loose its breath.
The quarrels fly a deadly path, from face to ringing face.
The lads and I give ragged cheer, and pick up the bloody pace.
Shieldman to the front, where are the lousy spears
Will somebody please fill the gap, I'm feeling naked here
And still the quarrels fly on down, a steady vicious rain
The enemy has felt it's breath, and now it's nasty sting
Their shield held high to stop the shots, coming from on high
Cannot stop our spearman, or our swords when coming nigh
Their commanders cry out from the back, will someone please attack
Will you kill that bloody tower
Somebody make a charge, and take out that bloody tower.
From within the wooden balustrades, there's singing from within,
And you really should have seen her move, like a drunken ballerina
The deadly rain falls with steady pace, and the commanders way in back
Are feeling what it's like to be, unceasingly attacked.
The tower, the tower, they brought a bloody tower,
And in the shadow of this thing, I finally caught a breath. When the battle finished, the warriors milled about.
The siege marshall settled disputes, while the enemy did pout.
Archers on the tower, gave us a stirring cheer
And don't you know to a man, we picked up their killing gear.
Not a bolt or arrow went missing, but was handed to the front
And through the door of the tower, they went in for the count
All the folks in my warband, we gave them such a cheer
Give them hell, you bastards, and we'll buy you all a beer.
A tower, a tower, they brought a bloody tower.
And when the folks from the other side, find out their annoying foe
They find the archers wear the sign, of the archers of Strongbow!
